American Military Executes Deadly Attack in Pacific, Resulting in Four Fatalities
As stated by a high-ranking defense spokesperson, the US military carried out a fatal strike on a boat in the eastern Pacific, resulting in the deaths of four people.
“A US joint task force carried out a lethal kinetic strike on a craft linked to a Designated Terrorist Organization in open sea. Intelligence verified the vessel was traveling along a known drug smuggling route and was engaged in narco-trafficking operations. All four male drug traffickers were killed, and no US military forces were injured.”
Context and Recent Actions
This announcement follows a day after a declaration regarding a naval blockade of all targeted oil tankers entering and leaving Venezuela. In that announcement on social media, the US president alleged Venezuela of using oil profits to fund narcotics smuggling and other crimes, pledging to escalate the military buildup.
Only on Tuesday, US defense officials stated it had carried out strikes on three boats it accused of smuggling narcotics in the Pacific, leading to the deaths of eight people. Beginning on 2 September, more than 20 strikes have killed at least 99 individuals, most off the coast of Venezuela.
Government Defends Actions Amid Pressure
The administration has encountered growing pressure to make public video of a September 2nd vessel attack. But, officials have refused to do so. The administration has supported its efforts as a success, arguing it has stopped drugs from entering US shores and has dismissed concerns that it is stretching the limits of lawful warfare.
While the administration has stated the operation is about halting drugs headed to the US, comments from a senior aide appeared to suggest a broader political objective. In a recently published interview, the senior advisor said the leader “aims to keep on blowing boats up until Venezuela's president cries uncle.”
This suggests the series of strikes may be part of a push to oust Venezuela's sitting leadership.
