Chicago White Sox Sign Japanese Slugger Munetaka Murakami on an Lucrative Multi-Million Dollar Deal.

In a notable move for their retooling roster, the American League club have signed infielder Munetaka Murakami, agreeing to a $34 million contract with the accomplished player.

Contract Details and Added Benefits

The contract grants a seven-figure signing bonus, to be paid within 30 days, alongside compensation of sixteen million for the upcoming season and $17 million for the 2027 year.

Importantly, Murakami's compensation can increase based on accolade achievements in 2026:

  • A seven-figure bonus for winning the league MVP award.
  • $500,000 for finishing as runner-up or in third place in MVP voting.
  • $250,000 for ranking fourth through 10th.
  • An identical bonus for winning the ROY honor.

His deal provides that he cannot be sent to the minor leagues without his approval and grants him a unrestricted player at the conclusion of the deal. Further benefits include a dedicated interpreter and airfare between Japan and the U.S..

Compensation and Historical Context

As part of the acquisition, Chicago must pay a compensation payment of over $6.5 million to the Yakult Swallows, Murakami's former team in Japan's professional league. The Yakult organization are also entitled to a supplemental fee of fifteen percent triggered performance bonuses.

Murakami joins the ranks as the fourth-ever Japanese-born to represent the White Sox, in the footsteps of reliever Shingo Takatsu (2004-05), second baseman Tadahito Iguchi (2005-07), and fielder Kosuke Fukudome (2012). Interestingly, Takatsu was a manager for Murakami during their time in Japan.

On-Field Accomplishments

Murakami, a left-handed hitter who turns 26 on February 2nd, enters a promising group of offensive players in Chicago that also features prospects like Colson Montgomery, Kyle Teel, and Chase Meidroth. The club are finished with a difficult season, finishing at the bottom in the AL Central but representing a 19-game improvement from the previous campaign.

The winner of back-to-back Central League MVP honors in '21 and '22, Murakami made history with a monumental 2022 season where he launched 56 HRs, breaking the single-season record for a NPB hitter previously held by legend Sadaharu Oh. That performance also made him the most youthful hitter ever to win Japan's prestigious batting Triple Crown.

His last year was shortened to a partial schedule due to an side strain. Even with fanning often, he batted .273 with 22 HRs and 47 runs batted in.

Over his eight-year tenure with the Swallows, Murakami has compiled a .270 lifetime batting average with 246 HRs, 647 RBIs, and nearly 1,000 strikeouts in nearly 900 games. Early in his career playing mostly at first, he has since transitioned to third base.

Murakami's big-game performance were on global view during the last World Baseball Classic. In the semifinal against Mexico, he drove in a game-ending double that drove in Shohei Ohtani and Masataka Yoshida for a thrilling one-run win. The following day in the title match against the United States, he slugged a game-tying homer in the early innings, helping Japan's subsequent 3-2 victory.
