‘Every minor detail – execute them’: The striker’s road from injury table to goals with Athletic

Whenhe debut appearance Gorka Guruzeta competed in the UK, an teenage appearing for the reserve team against Borussia Mönchengladbach Under-23s at the English ground in September 2015, he found the net. On his next visit he played in British turf, against the English side weeks after, he scored. The third time, against the Citizens soon after, sure enough, he did it once more. Upon his comeback to the city to take on Manchester United at Leigh Sports Village in that year, he did it once more. It was a superb volley, too. “Truly,” he remarks, “it’s a top-class goal in my career.” Thus the club did what they had to do: they substituted him.

“I was furious,” the Athletic striker admits, then chuckling. “Probably there’s a recording. Our match against United and I was pretty good. I wasn’t allowed to feature the second half: I was without a signed agreement, goals were flowing, there were lots of rumours, you know how it is. I’m unsure regarding interest from Newcastle, but I remember reading about Manchester United, the typical thing. It’s unclear if it was accurate, but had they contacted me, I would have wanted to stay at the club. It’s a privilege.”

Real Sociedad ease tension with bizarre win in unique Basque clash

At the facility, the city, the morning session is about to start; following that, the quick travel to Loiu and another trip to Britain, this time to play Newcastle in the Champions League on Wednesday. Just saying those two words brings a smile to his face. It’s turning out to be a difficult season for the team, due in part to the pressures of their participation. Beaten in added time in the derby on Saturday, they have managed just one win of their past eight league games and fallen to the Gunners and the German side in the continental stage. Yet, look at the overall situation, the major occasions he’s experienced and future challenges, and a sense of thankful reflection within him.

In the 36 months since he had returned to the club, the striker has been a final four contender in Europe, denied at the last hurdle a domestic final by the English giants, and has traveled on a traditional boat up the Nervión estuary accompanied by a million fans after lifting the trophy, the first title in a long wait. Now he is the top goal-getter in the European competition, where they are countercultural and making their first appearance in a decade. “This was beyond my dreams,” he says.

The player believed it difficult enough just to break into the senior squad and that proved true. As the child of the former Real Sociedad player the former professional and a season ticket holder at the team he now opposes, Gorka is a graduate of Antiguoko, the San Sebastián club that nurtured the Arsenal manager, the former star and the Bournemouth manager. His move to Athletic came at seventeen but after his first-team bow in the 2018 season, he suffered a serious knee problem, the cut, a relegation and a call back before he could truly get a chance, returning at 26 to experience the peak of his career.

Gorka Guruzeta in training
Gorka Guruzeta gets ready to play Newcastle in the European competition.

“You go into the academy doubting you’ll make the senior squad but every phase you go through you’re persisting and you can notice the proximity. You arrive and then … departure is necessary.” He played six, nine, five, one, four and 20 minutes in a handful of matches between his bow and February 2019. “Then I was sent to the filial [Bilbao Athletic, the Under-23s]. Five, six games at that level and I tear my cruciate.

“A massive setback but I reflect on it as something positive because it forced me to alter the way I saw things. The rehabilitation process is difficult, but it’s beneficial. You develop habits new to you. It’s not that you don’t look after yourself, but I did the sessions and then head home, as a youngster does. At Lezama, you have everything, so utilize it all. Practice, prevention. Strength training. Should your hips be uneven, work on that. With decent ankle function, enhance it further. All the minor details: perform them.

“At the top level you’re going to crash into players who have experienced contact repeatedly. Highly robust. I look at photos of me before: my physique was slight. Thus incidents occur. Current photos and the change is dramatic. Recovery revealed that. Sessions end, but additional work remains. Peers are prepared, really ready; you have to be too.”

Minutes are crucial. Guruzeta departed upset in 2020, aged 23, dropping into the second division. With Sabadell in that season, he netted three goals in forty appearances. At Amorebieta in the latter part of the season, the scoring picked up. “Players go through it: loans, terminated contracts. With a turnaround, effort, faith, and should the time come the requirement appears where you play, they might come back for you. Preparation is key. Upon the recall, an aspiration fulfilled. Lifting the cup, European football, and reach the Champions League … pfff.”

Understandably he remarks savor the moment. Especially after the previous season which, at times, was focused on persistence. After being leading scorer with sixteen goals, last season he got seven in {15 games more|additional matches|
