From Struggling to Imperfect – Is There Any Team Truly Desiring to Win the Big Game During This Campaign?
No league markets equal footing in the manner of the NFL: it's their core marketing message. But through 10 weeks of this season, this isn’t a league that is equally balanced between the good, the bad and the mediocre. Rather, we see a situation where the bulk of franchises is simply sufficient.
NFC Clarity
Looking at the NFC side, at least, there is some clarity. The Rams and Seahawks (both standing at seven wins, two losses) seem like the most complete teams across the league, and secured decisive victories in their weekend matchups. The Eagles with six wins despite their struggles maintain a deeply skilled squad across the NFL, similar to Green Bay (5-2-1 record). The Lions also (6-3 standing), who have been inconsistent in trench play while managing tension on their coaching staff, have shown they're capable of dominating quality opponents. For all five, one can readily put together a route to the final game.
Muddled AFC Picture
Turning to the American Football Conference, the playoff picture remains completely chaotic. The four teams leading their divisions after ten games: Indianapolis, New England, Denver (all at 8-2) along with Pittsburgh (five wins, four losses). Consider that carefully. Not the Chiefs. Not the Bills. Neither Ravens nor Bengals. The usual contenders, featuring elite NFL signal-callers, display either significant personnel gaps or have been hit by injuries.
Parity Mechanics
To some extent, this represents the NFL's perfect scenario. Yet observing the current division frontrunners in the American Football Conference still feels strange. Aspects of each franchise suggest title potential, though not comprehensively. Were you questioned to commit to your conference championship predictions at this moment, would you comfortably pick any of these four teams?
Team Breakdowns
Indianapolis Colts
First, examining Indianapolis, Daniel Jones hasn't yet achieved complete disaster level. However, recent performances have raised concerns. He’s back to giving away possessions and struggling against pressure. He took seven sacks versus Atlanta in the weekend game, and experienced a brief period where he delivered an intercepted pass and lost three fumbles. This is a week after he gave away possessions five times facing the Steelers.
Indianapolis' offensive unit thrived early in the season as Jones prevented game-changing errors. The running back and protection unit mean the Colts are able to withstand periodic mistakes, as they did in Berlin. However, if Jones reverts to his old blunder-prone days would end championship hopes.
New England Analysis
New England appears somewhat similar. Previously, they were league laughingstocks. Currently, they represent the NFL's most pleasant shock and the strongest squad in football post seven wins in a row. If not for fumbling away a manageable matchup facing Pittsburgh, they would currently hold at 9–1 with the best record. Previously, they appeared aged and sluggish. Today they appear inexperienced, speedy and bold. Still, it’s hard to ignore the weakness of New England's opponents. They have faced the easiest slate in the league, and flaws have still emerged. Drake Maye has taken sacks on 35 occasions – among the highest totals – with several hits he endured during the game proved brutal. As the season progresses, that punishment compounds.
Denver Analysis
The Broncos hold eight wins similarly, and the perception remains that they're barely surviving. Their quarterback has shown inconsistency, with the attack struggling, as the defense handles the majority of the work. Lacking competent QB performance, the Broncos aren’t scaring any playoff team. Los Angeles remains nearby in the Western division at 7-2, but the injuries affecting their protection unit will make it tough to achieve championship contention.
Pittsburgh Steelers
Meanwhile, Pittsburgh exists, inexplicably frontrunning the Northern division even after suffering a 25-10 defeat from the Chargers in the evening game. Their scoring margin remains negative, their defensive unit frequently falters, and Aaron Rodgers’ limitations given his veteran status continue to show up. At 5-4, they're barely clinging, but Baltimore, with Lamar Jackson healthy again and facing easier opponents, are riding a three-game streak. It shouldn’t be too much of a surprise that the Ravens have pulled the gap to just one game, but that it has arrived so quickly highlights deficiencies within the Steelers' uneven performances. That the Ravens started losing five of six and currently seem likely to claim the title is telling about the conference as a whole.
Historical Favorites
The Ravens' form part among three elite teams – alongside the Bills and Chiefs – driven by elite quarterback play, who could still create the greatest concern in opposing teams if they made the playoffs. They represent undesirable playoff matchups, but the Chiefs and Bills cannot get out of their own way.
Buffalo Analysis
Last week, the Bills were riding high post Chiefs triumph. On Sunday they suffered among the season's worst defeats of the season. They didn't simply fail to the Dolphins; they were embarrassed, dropping a 30-13 road game. The Dolphins secured their first triumph versus Buffalo in several seasons.
