Israeli citizens observe two-year anniversary of 7 October attacks as Palestinian peace negotiations advance
Israelis have gathered across the country to mark the second anniversary since the Hamas-initiated offensive on October 7th, 2023, as talks advanced in the neighboring country over a resolution to the war in the Gaza Strip.
The incident resulted in more than 1,200 people losing their lives and 251 others abducted away to Gaza as captives. It was the single deadliest day for Jews since the Holocaust.
Israel answered by launching a military offensive in Gaza which has claimed more than 67,000 people, as reported by the territory's Hamas-run health ministry. Its statistics are considered reliable by the UN and other world agencies.
"Our bloodthirsty opponents have hit us hard, but they have not defeated us," the leader remarked on that day.
He also promised to "realize all the aims of the war: the homecoming of all the captured, the destruction of the Hamas administration and the promise that Gaza will no longer pose a risk to Israel".
Commemorative Events Across Israel
The national leadership postponed formal remembrance events until mid-October - after the end of the Jewish High Holiday season - but gatherings still occurred across the country on Tuesday.
A commemorative event for the loved ones of Israelis killed in the Hamas incident was conducted in the coastal city. Put together by the victims' relatives, it was televised across Israeli broadcast stations.
Some time earlier, a moment of silence was observed around the country.
Peace Talks in Egypt
Meanwhile, the conflicting parties' delegations met in the Egyptian coastal city of the Egyptian city for a second day of indirect talks to examine the conditions of the proposal.
A prominent Palestinian official involved in the talks indicated that an night meeting of indirect talks began at 7 PM local time.
The source stated the earlier meeting ended without significant progress, amid differences over the suggested Israeli pullout plans from Gaza and over assurances Hamas wants to make certain Israel does not restart combat after the first phase of the arrangement.
He noted that the discussions are "tough and have yet to deliver any significant progress," but noted that facilitators are striving to reduce the gaps between the both parties.
Key Points in Negotiations
- An enduring ceasefire
- The trade of the captives still detained by Hamas for inmates from Gaza
- The withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza
- Plans for relief supplies provision
- After-conflict administration of the territory
Public Feeling
In Tel Aviv's public square previously, 29-year-old Hagar - whose sibling survived the assault on the gathering, where hundreds were murdered and numerous more were abducted by Hamas gunmen - told: "No place seems like home anymore and until each abducted person are released none of us will be secure."
"After we see everybody home once more, we can relax anew. Then we can begin to recover," she continued.
Near the leader's official dwelling in Jerusalem, people gathered to show their solidarity for the families of the captives. Israel says forty-eight stay in confinement in Gaza, approximately twenty of whom are believed to be living.
Demonstrator Atalia Regev remarked: "It's necessary do every compromise necessary for the hostages to come back home. But we really want promises that we will be safe."
Opinion polls now frequently demonstrate that approximately 70% of Israeli citizens want the war to conclude in exchange for the freedom of the hostages.
Gaza Circumstances
At the site of the music event, those paying respects came together to remember the victims.
From there, the boom of Israeli air strikes and shelling could be heard just a few kilometres away in Gaza, where observers indicated the intense Israeli bombardment continued.
In the urban center, bombardments were noted in the morning of that day in the western neighborhood, Rimal and zone neighbourhoods and in the eastern district of the community, as well the settlement to the north-west.
"When the dusk falls, the anxiety comes with it," displaced Gaza City resident Emaan al-Wahidi, whose teenage son was lost his life by an Israeli aerial attack previously, shared.
"My family are fearful of the attacks. During nighttime we are resting together, clinging, especially my youngest child who rests his head on me throughout the night."
"Constantly we check the news to see what happened. And I'm concerned that this truce will not be finalized and that the fighting will resume to us."
Medical Emergency
The healthcare center in the urban area reported it had received the bodies of several people by the daytime, including three killed in an Israeli bombing in the southern area.
Nasser hospital in the south region of the city reported two more victims had been brought there. A person was killed by Israeli troops while looking for aid to the south region, medical staff stated.
