The Brothers from the Dagestani Region Excelling in MMA and with Man Utd.

Ibragim Ibragimov smiles as he considers how his clan's life has transformed since relocating to England from Dagestan eight years ago.

"I adore it here," the Professional Fighters League competitor remarks.

"My father and I often comment, 'this is the nation I ought to have been born in.'"

The young man departed his home in the North Caucasus of Russia as his father believed a move spanning more than 3,000 miles would provide better professional prospects for him and his siblings.

The initial idea was for Ibragim and his three brothers – Amir (17), Gazik (16), and Muhammad (15) – to complete school before enrolling in one of the country's universities.

However, life has turned out somewhat distinct for the Ibragimov family.

Ibragim is now a professional mixed martial arts athlete and is regarded as one of the prime prospects in the PFL, a leading MMA league.

His brothers have taken a separate path in athletics and have each been contracted by Manchester United – with Amir pushing for a place in the senior squad.

"Our key thing for us is to extract everything from our sports," explains Ibragim.

"I desire them to play for all of the finest teams in the world. Today it is Man United, tomorrow it might be a another team."

From Wrestlers to Football Prodigies

Located in the south of Russia, Dagestan holds a mythical status among combat sports enthusiasts for generating a host of UFC champions in the past few years.

The region has a long tradition in grappling, thriving in the combat sambo style and producing a host of Olympic and world champions.

This achievement is no accident, however, as children from the region are often encouraged to take up fighting, specifically wrestling, practically as soon as they can stand.

"When I was a kid, my dad was constantly telling me and my little brothers that we had to be strong, first to protect ourselves, your relatives, and your companions," states Ibragim.

"So we all became accustomed to fighting, and which is why everyone knows how to fight in Dagestan. It's unsurprising."

"Amir was a excellent wrestler. You can observe the move from wrestling to football; obviously, it benefited my younger brothers a great deal."

"Some of the players he faces don't have the identical base he possesses. That's why he's stocky, strong and really competitive – because of wrestling."

Amir was only nine years old when he was being tested at Sheffield United. Not knowing of his real age, coaches placed him with boys five years older.

He was not intimidated by the oversight and was more than comfortable holding his own against older players thanks to his background in wrestling.

"They believed Amir and I were the identical age, so the story goes," says Ibragim.

Amir was recruited, along with Ibragim's little brothers Gazik and Muhammad.

The family's time in South Yorkshire was brief, however, as only weeks after joining the Blades, Manchester United learned of Amir's ability and he transferred across the Pennines consequently.

"They played Manchester United in a competition and Amir scored a brilliant free-kick," recalls Ibragim.

"One of their scouts watched him play and picked him immediately."

Half a dozen years after joining the Manchester United club and at the age of 15, Amir was one of the most youthful players in the club's history to practice with the first team when he did so in April 2023.

"Know what he told me? 'Here is where I belong'," Ibragim reveals.

"Can he be a first-team player for Manchester United? Without a doubt. They need to let all the young players play right now."

"In my opinion they would play worse than the current first-team players. I believe the young guys are more motivated than the current squad members."

Following that, Gazik and Muhammad, the latter once part of the academy of Manchester City, have also made the move to Manchester United.

"Gazik, this youngster is gifted," continues Ibragim.

"He learned everything faster than everyone else. He's a solid defender. He's going to be like a new Rio Ferdinand for Man United."

'The Dream' to Fight at the Theatre of Dreams

Ibragim has also moved to Manchester and spends most of his days honing his MMA abilities at Manchester Top Team.

In August, he passed three weeks in his homeland at Khabib Nurmagomedov's gym, assisting Islam Makhachev prepare for a late-year UFC title fight.

"I never have thought I would be learning under Khabib," Ibragim admits.

"He was the best fighter in the world – and we constantly used to look up to him when we were young."

"Now, I'm here in his gym and sparring alongside Islam Makhachev."

Recently training with two UFC champions from Dagestan, it is unsurprising Ibragim states he is desperate to claim a world title of his own one day.

However that does not prevent him from occasionally fantasizing of representing United and walking out on the historic turf at Old Trafford, much like his brothers.

"I had a PlayStation at home and I always used to play as Man United, scoring goals with legendary players," he recalls.

"Now, for my brothers to be Man United players, it's similar to a fantasy realized."

"A fight at Old Trafford? It's a dream for me. I was speaking to the PFL officials about it to see if they would make it happen. It would be huge."
