The Iconic Puzzle Game Wouldn't Succeed at This Gaming Ceremony — An Additional Classification May Address This Issue

As any significant prize-giving event approaches, there’s always a clamor to include additional classifications to recognize underappreciated efforts and delight the passions of enthusiasts who have specialized interests.

Another commentator has already made for a horror game category. That would rule. So would strategy board titles, this being a dedicated supporter's campaign. However, I must insist when I prioritize just as with other dedicated enthusiasts, there's a strong justification for why my demand stands as crucial above others. This is the request: There should be an award type for logic-based games.

Categorizing Game Types

Categorizing art by genre defies precise measurement; it remains highly personal, and inevitably generate discussions and end in fuzzy definitions. It's understandable that film award organizations avoid this approach. But it is a necessary evil in the world of video games, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them as a single art form.

For the full spectrum of gaming accomplishments to gain proper attention, while allowing diverse titles to receive proper recognition, genre categories are essential.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Leading game ceremonies currently feature award types recognizing Action, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these six categories actually cover many game types, allowing placement for numerous titles.

Not so for puzzle games. No appropriate category exists for their placement. Think about these recent excellent titles, each quite distinct: building puzzles in a particular game, the pulse-pounding block-matching in a different title, engaging interpersonal challenges from additional release. What category would fit them within current classifications? Simply put, no category fits.

Acknowledgment Issues

There are dozens excellent brain-teasers published annually lacking appropriate categories in entertainment awards, except when they manage to fit for categories like Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging Indie races.

  • An iconic brain-teaser received no recognition completely in 2014
  • Another imaginative release missed out during that ceremony
  • Well-received sorting experience was overlooked in 2021
  • Just some brain-teasers managed to sneak into niche award types

Significance of Puzzle Games

Frequently they represent modest productions, but the art of the puzzle game carries substantial weight. Iconic mobile puzzle games stand as most engaged experiences globally and have been for an extended period.

The famous puzzle experience competes with popular creative games claiming status as highest-selling title ever; it also contends for top gaming experience. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks for gaming as medium, and engaging with almost every other genre.

Proposal and Rationale

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter that issue. One could readily select multiple candidates with fascinating, diverse, deserving games every year with ease — perhaps, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave many worthy titles.

Restating the point, these are games lacking appropriate categories at major gaming awards. Puzzle game makers operate at the demanding boundary game development, producing among most fundamental forms of the video game form. Comparable to cinema stunt performers, they merit acknowledgment. We shouldn't delay 35 years.
