The Red Devils Poised to Secure Germany Forward Lea Schüller away from Bayern Munich
Manchester United are on the verge of sealing the deal for prolific Germany striker Lea Schüller in a permanent move away from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.
A Marquee Signing for United
The forward, with six months remaining on her deal, is known as a prolific goal-getter for both club and country. Having netted over 100 goals for the German giants and found the net 54 times in 82 caps for her country. Her arrival is viewed as a marquee coup for the WSL side.
Departure from Bayern was expected after she was seen fighting back tears while thanking the German club’s supporters following a victory over Bayer Leverkusen this month.
Reports in late December that the German women's top flight was losing one of its top strikers. Per reports, all the paperwork for the transfer have now been completed.
Consistent Goal Threat to Boost the Forward Line
The experienced striker's arrival is expected to provide a major boost to the team's attacking options. Schüller has been highly consistent in front of goal in Germany’s top flight.
- For seven straight seasons, including the last term, she achieved at least a double-digit tally of league goals.
- She won the Golden Boot in 2021-22 season with 16 goals.
Building Steam at Old Trafford
The acquisition of Schüller’s signature comes at a time when United appear to be gathering momentum.
Recent performances feature qualifying for the Champions League knockout phase playoffs in a seeded position and a victory in the Conti Cup quarter-finals.
Off the pitch, the winter break has seen additional business:
- The signing of Swedish defender Hanna Lundkvist on a three-and-a-half-year deal.
- The contract extension for Japanese midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, who has become popular figure since joining in 2023.
On Miyazawa’s extension, a club official commented: “Miyazawa is now a critical part to the way we play. Her understanding of the game and technical ability enables her and the team to control and dictate play from the middle of the park.”
The new defender, having joined from a club in the NWSL, added: “You can sense how much the club have grown in the last few years, competing in one of the strongest leagues in the world and now featuring in the Champions League.”
