Zak Crawley Claims Ignorance of Captain Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Remarks

England opener Crawley suggested he was not familiar with comments made by skipper Ben Stokes regarding the dressing room not being "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes made this message in multiple conversations in the wake of his team's loss in the second match of the Ashes versus the Australians earlier this month.

In the lead-up to the Adelaide Test, where the visitors now face a series loss at the earliest opportunity, the captain stated he had let his message to "drift around" among the playing group.

"I have completed the necessary discussions in recent days that I needed to have done," said the England leader.

However, following Crawley made a knock of 85 on the penultimate day in Adelaide, he stated: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the media with a pinch of salt," he added.

Frank Discussions and Consistent Messaging

Stokes issued his "fragile individuals" observation subsequent to his side suffered a loss in Brisbane to go 2-0 down.

The England squad subsequently took a break to Noosa between the second and the upcoming matches.

Before this match, he said his players had held "raw" conversations and he had urged them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to stay in contention in the Ashes battle.

Nevertheless, Crawley asserted the guidance from the captain and head coach Brendon McCullum had stayed in line with their previous tenure in charge.

"It's been extremely upbeat, the same as always," said Crawley. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with great liberty. It felt like we could do an extraordinary feat entering this game."

The Hosts Close of Rapid Ashes Triumph

Crawley's dismissal late on Saturday came during a crucial three-wicket burst by Australia off-spinner Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in a short spell – he also bowled Harry Brook and Stokes himself – meant England 207-6 chasing a notional target of 435 runs.

This means, the home team need four wickets on Sunday's final day to secure an insurmountable three-nil lead after three matches played.

Defeat will extend the English team's drought in this country to 18 Tests and condemn them to a fourth successive away Ashes series defeat.

This series will be completed in only 11 days of cricket – with England losing the first two Tests in rapid time each.

Not since 1921, when the Australians completed victory in England in eight days, has the destination of the urn been determined so quickly. Australia have also won in 11 days on two other occasions in the modern era.

"It's disappointing," admitted Crawley. "Our goal was to win the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel now."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we will certainly approach it with that mindset," he continued.

"It's been tough. Australia is a very, very good team. It was inevitably tough touring here to face them. They were the favourites and have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Position Under Scrutiny

While the opener's innings in Adelaide likely secures doubts about his short-term future in the England team, Pope looks under immense pressure for his spot in the Melbourne Test on Boxing Day.

The Surrey batsman was out for 17 in the team's second innings on day four, adding to his modest returns against the old enemy.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has failed to score a half-century and averages just 17.62.

A solitary other English batsman in over a century – Dennis Amiss – has featured an equal number of innings in the top six in the Ashes and recorded a poorer average.

But, the opener insisted any suggestion Pope is being scrutinised comes from "you guys" – meaning the press – "and not within the team."

"We all know of his considerable talent," added Crawley. "He has had a productive year if I'm honest."

"He has played several excellent innings. This is noise externally. There's no chat of that nature on Ollie in the camp," Crawley concluded.
